This week in lab we focused on research. From our research we decided it would be best to use an infrared sensor for our device. The sensor will transmit an infrared light where the pulse is being taken, such as the wrist, and is reflected back to the sensor from the user's blood. The blood volume inside the user's arteries determines the intensity of the light that is reflected back. Every time the user's heart rate changes it will alter the blood volume within the user's arteries. This change is detected by the sensor which can then use this information to determine a user's heart rate.
We purchased three of these heart rate sensors for our project. We are also borrowing an Arduino board from the Innovation Studio to connect to the sensor.
